Ordered first product of BSC . Really super quality packing is so standard and well packed first impression was on that itself. The shaving blade comes with 2 pack. And grip is so handy. Easy to clean loved the material quality. Totally worth for the money

Atomic Rabbit –
I have purchased this razor on Jan and its the time I started to move from cartridge to safety razor shaving. I was using a pearl razor closed comb and thought to try the open comb. Chose Bombay razor which comes comes two plates. Mild and aggressive. Meaning closed and open comb plates. The appearance is good but when it comes to grip its very hard to hold. The problem with the mild plate is it won’t remove the hairs in the first place and you may have to go 3 or 4 passes instead of 2 passes. So the normal plate is waste. Second of all, the Aggressive plate is something need to talk about. Excellent but still its very aggressive, changes the skin tone which is I hate it most but the shaving experience is good. Now let’s talk about the included feather blades. Sharpest blades in the world? I don’t say that. Even Wilkinson sword and Gillette winner does excellent job. Bombay shaving recommends shaving with feather blades and also they are promoting no nicks and cuts. Well I tried the feather blades and got nick in the very first shave but nicks are happen in wet shaving. It’s alright but I tried the same with pearl closed comb and no cuts and offered the best shave ever. If you ask me if Bombay shaving razor is worth the money? No. Its not worth for 700 to 1000 rupees. And also I would suggest to always go for closed comb razors which is less than 600. If you are fond of razor collection and if you have money you could always buy Parker or merkur or even Rockwell razors.

I have been wet shaving for a year or so and came across this product and definitely wanted to add this to my collection….
Yes, I have been bitten by the razor collection bug and I own the Merkur 34C, Merkur 37 C slant, Parker 96 R, Parker Variant, Parker SR1, Edwin Jagger DE 89, Qshave, Yaqi double open comb, Feather Popular, Pearl, Baili rose gold, ZY Carbon Steel straight Razor and many shaving brushes Razo rock monster,Semogue, omega,Trigidon,Yaqi badger hair and shaving soaps proraso,Palmolive,TOBS,tabac, nivea etc. etc.…I can go on and on….
And while I was going through the questions and I thought of compiling them as I am passionate about this subject, and also so that it helps you take a call, since this product is non-returnable so you need to take an informed decision.
This will be a long read, but I’m sure you will benefit from it.
Let me try and answer a few questions
Q-The cost is expensive
A- Yes, in the world of wet shaving the start-up/Entry cost of the double edge safety razor is high, while the cost of blades are cheap. The best part is that in the long run they end up cheaper as the blades give you around 3- 10 shaves ( I personally dispose them after the 3rd shave), so basically even in worst come worst scenario you will get 3 shaves, which will end up much more cheaper than a multi-blade cartridge. Also consider that you get a pack of 10 feather blades which on their own cost around 900 bucks for 20 blades.
Q- Who should use it and why?
A – Anyone man who loves his face, doesn’t want ingrown hair, razor burn, loves the environment (Since the blades are recyclable) and loves to save money can use this with a little bit of practice. Even women can use this to shave their legs etc.
Any person who has a heavy stubble and uses the multi-blade cartridge knows how the cartridge clogs up with hair in a single swipe, and therefore you keep going over the same patch multiple times leading to razor burn.
This will not happen with double edge razors. Also cartridge multi-Blades work on the concept of Hysteresis – “Pull and cut” technique (look it up online for in-depth info) which leads to ingrown hair, which doesn’t happen with these types of razors.
Q- Can I use this to shape my beard or Moustache?
A – Infact, your beardlines and moustache shaping will be much more accurate with this than with a multi-blade razor as you will have to keep guessing which blade will be shaving off the hair, but with the single blade you know exactly where it will cut. Also this razor is much more accurate for areas near the nostrils and side burns.
Q – Is it easy to transition from a cartridge razor to this razor?
A – Yes and No, Wet shaving is an art, remember our dad’s would take time with their shaving and would develop their own style of shaving (Making weird faces mandatorily). Similarly you will have to learn to shave with this razor, you will have to practice with no pressure, 30 degree angle shaving, learn about the grains I:E with the grain, Across and against the grain and then get used to it.
Having said that it is not difficult at all and you can get a good shave in a matter of weeks. But if you expect to just take mindless swipes with this razor you will be disappointed, this isn’t Maggi noodles.
Infact, there are very good quality tutorials online and check for Mantic59, Geofatboy,Kevy shaves, Ken surfs and you will learn a lot from them and have an enjoyable shave.
Q – Should I use the mild head or the aggressive head?
A – If you are a daily shaver or a beginner, I suggest you go in for the mild attachment, which will be forgiving if you are developing your technique, always use light pressure and shave in short strokes like an inch or so. If you have a heavy stubble or not a daily shaver and have relative experience you could go in for the aggressive setting. Remember feather is a very aggressive blade, while Astra, derby, etc are relatively mild blades.
Q -How to insert or remove the blade?
A – There is a technique which I learnt, which I would like to share, it will help load or remove the blade safely. Check images for a better understanding.
1. Put the razor head (Inverted) on the palm of your hand.
2. Hold the blade on the blunt edges and put them on the post
3. Load the base plate above the blade
4. Take the handle and then start tightening it lightly until it’s lightly tight.
5. Hold the razor on the blunt sides (NOT THE SHARP EDGES) and tighten. DON’T OVERTIGHTEN
Use this technique to safely load and remove the blades carefully.
Q – Which blades can be used?
A – This is the best part of double edge razors, You have the freedom to use any blade that you want, while the company recommends the feather blades, you can use an Astra,Personna,Supermax,Topaz,Voshkod,Derby….in short, any one that you are comfortable with.
Remember that each skin type is different so you will have to experiment with the type of blade that you want to use. My personal favorites are feather on the aggressive blades and derby on the milder blades.
Q – How long will this last? Will it break if I drop it?
A – While the Blades will last you for 3 shaves minimum for a comfortable smooth and close shave (Based on personal experience), there are some claims online which say 10 shaves, but I wouldn’t recommend that unless you want your face on fire with razor burn.
With regards to the razor you need to take care that you don’t drop it and ensure you dry off your hands off water and soap to ensure a good grip. I have read online where even Edwin Jagger DE 89 which costs around Rs.3500, break when dropped, so I think it isn’t a fair argument. If I drop my iPhone even that will break, that doesn’t mean the iPhone is flawed. If you respect your tools they will love you back and last generations.
Q – Is it rust proof?
A – While the entire razor is given a coating of Nickle Chrome Plating, if you leave a wet blade in the razor it will definitely rust, the blade that is. So after every shave you need to loosen the post and rinse the razor and dry it. Keep a napkin in the bathroom to wipe the razor (Not the blade) for a rust free experience. Every week I clean my razors with rubbing alcohol with a toothbrush.
Q – How to avoid cuts on these types of razors?
A – I remember the first time I moved from the Gillette cartridge to double edge razors, it was an horrible experience, my face was on fire and I was about to throw the razor in the bin, till I decided to study a bit and improve my technique. Based on my experience I can suggest the following
– Try and shave after taking a shower/bath, so that the skin is soft and supple and the stubble is wet.
– Use a pre-shave oil or any moisturizer or light cream (Even vicco turmeric will do, my personal favorite) and massage the stubble, this will protect the skin.
– Use a good shaving soap or cream (For the love of god don’t use shaving foam as it is full of anti-freeze and propellants which dry up the skin and are harmful), use a soft bristle shaving brush and lather up your face (Boar,Badger,Synthetic – your choice)
– Upon lathering your face use minimal pressure and angle the razor at 30 degress and use short strokes to shave.
– You can go in for multiple passes with the grain, across the grain from ear to nose, from nose to ear and against the grain.
– Remember to use a non-alcohol based after shave lotion to moisturize your skin after shaving.
Q – Can I shave against the grain?
A – I personally don’t shave against the grain as I have sensitive skin and it gives me crazy razor burn, Nicks and irritation. But if it rocks your boat, by all means shave against the grain for that BBS shave. Basically it’s a personal choice and not a requirement.
On to the review of the razor
What I like about this razor
– Premium quality build and precision workmanship, no sharp edges
– It comes with a sheath to protect the fingers against accidental slices while handling the razor, good to child proof the razor.
– No blade alignment issues on both heads
– No blade overhang
– Good weight, so the razor does all the work
– Provides a smooth and close shave
– Balance point is good and the long handle provides a good grip
– It’s an indian company and the product is used all over the world. Making india proud.
– The company stands by their razors, saw few reviews where the co is willing to replace the faulty heads for their customers, they listen to the voice of the customer, made me buy with confidence…Much Respect!
What I don’t like
– The amount spent on decorating the box could’ve been spent on at least providing a carrying case/Cover which would be useful while travelling which will result in more usage.
– While the 3 piece design gives a vintage feel, a TTO which are much easier to load and use would’ve been easier for the beginners to induct themselves into wet shaving.
– The Engraving option is available only purchase from BSC website…Y U Do DIS?
– Pricey presentation , recommend that the box be a simple one like the Merkurs, Parkers and Edwin Jaggers are and for the same price add a shaving brush and a sample shaving cream which will help the beginners with a complete package.
– A metal base stand would’ve been awesome to dry the razor in the bathroom, but these add-ons are missing.
– A pack of 10 feather blades are waste if you don’t like them, rather just give one blade and let the customer than take a call and re-order as per liking. Reroute that cost towards a carry case or some other accessory.
Overall, I feel that this product will take a learning curve and once you learn the skills you will definitely enjoy using double edge safety razors, it may be a little pricey but it will pay back in the long run.
I hope this helped you on your quest towards a close ……………and comfortable shave!
